Ularitharion Moonstone and the Viridian Shield: A History
12,000 years ago...
Ularitharion Moonstone was born in the small Night Elven settlement of Tandralas, the son of Aldestris and Firenna Moonstone and younger brother of Colora Moonstone. Aldestris and Firenna were retainers to Lord Skyfire, and Ularitharion entered his service as well. The young Kaldorei had a natural affinity to animals, and served as an assistant to the Stable-Master. He was awkward around other elves, however, and had few friends. Chief amongst these was his sister Colora, who was an acolyte at the Temple of the Moon. Ularitharion also longed for the love of the Lady Iliciana Skyfire, the daughter of his lord, but knew that his social standing was too low for this to ever be more than an unrequited dream.
10,000 years ago...
The Burning Legion attacked. Lord Skyfire led his followers to war to join with the larger forces of Lord Ravencrest. Amongst his followers were Colora and Ularitharion, whose parents perished during the initial demonic invasion. Ularitharion was one of the common, unsung heroes of the war – he served as a scout and managed to survive the war. During the Sundering, Tandralas was not engulfed by the sea, but was buried in a landslide and lost. In later years, the goblins would build the city of Ratchet over its ruins, unaware that the older Kaldorei castle lay beneath them.
9,900 years ago...
During the rebuilding period following the destruction of the Moonwell, Ularitharion began an affair with Iliciana Skyfire. It is unknown whether her emotions were honest in this case: certainly she had been known to play with the affections of others for political advantage or for her own amusement in the past, but she may also have been pressured into ending the affair by her disapproving family. In either case, when the time of her Choosing came, Iliciana did not Choose Ularitharion, as she had promised, and Colora revealed to her younger brother the nature of his beloved, which he had wilfully ignored. Distraught, Ularitharion left the service of Lord Skyfire and sought to forget his past by becoming one of Malfurion Stormrage's druids. Despite his affinity for the wilderness, Ularitharion had great difficulty initially; it was only when he was able to renounce the emotions stirred by his affair with Iliciana that he was able to make progress. Ularitharion said farewell to Colora, and then entered the Emerald Dream with the other Druids.

When the Burning Legion returned, Tyrande Whisperwind and Malfurion Stormrage awoke the slumbering Druids. Amongst those was Ularitharion Moonstone. Ularitharion had spent much time in the Emerald Dream with the green dragon Ysaldrionna, the Malachite Wing, and had spent ten thousand years assuming the forms of all the different animals to live amongst them. Now a powerful druid, Ularitharion fought against the Burning Legion at Mount Hyjal, and managed to survive that dreadful battle largely unscathed.

The reunion was initially awkward, for Ularitharion had forgotten most of his life before entering the Emerald Dream, but they managed to become friends once again. Both Ularitharion and Colora joined an expedition led by Malfurion Stormrage to the strange eastern continent and the lands of Lordaeron to fight against Illidan Stormrage. In the wake of the battle, Ularitharion decided to remain in Lordaeron: the natural world there was greatly damaged, and the people living in fear and danger. He decided to see what he could do to help them.

The Exodar descended from the heavens and crashed upon Azuremyst Isle, causing vast ecological devestation. As the Cenarion Circle, at Staghelm's decree, decided not to act, Ularitharion assembled many of his friends from his adventures of the previous four years. An expedition was funded by Lady Casteldra Andralis, and the heroes set off for the crash-site. Ularitharion and his comrades were thus the first natives to make contact with the Draenei, and while this contact was not peaceful initially, a common ground was able to be reached between Ularitharion and the shaman Shilandria, especially once a legion of Naga emerged from the sea to attack both Ularitharion's group and the Draenei. The two sides put aside their differences and fought in defence of the Exodar, managing to drive the Naga back into the sea. As a result, the prophet Velen decided to approach the Alliance for further aid, and to affiliate the Draenei with the Alliance.

Censured by the Archdruid for his actions at Azuremyst Isle before the Cenarion Circle, Ularitharion responded by condemning the Circle's lack of action. He then declared that his own allies would act where the Circle would not, to be a Viridian Shield that would defend the natural world and natural races from harm. Following this speech, the Viridian Shield was formed as a loose order bound by philosophy. Many Draenei joined the nascent order, as well as other Kaldorei disillusioned with the Archdruid.

To demonstrate their conviction, Ularitharion led the Viridian Shield on a crusade against the Wailing Caverns. The taint upon the Emerald Dream weakened Ularitharion greatly, but nevertheless the Viridian Shield was successful in purging the taint from the Barrens. Following their success, Ularitharion created a great storm and collapsed the caverns.

Sherazhina of the Draenei vanished during a scouting mission on Shadowfang Keep. Her comrade-in-arms, Azaile, received a letter from a pale elf in black which purported to be from her, saying she had gone on ahead to attack the Keep and could not wait for allies. Azaile shared this letter with his comrades in the Viridian Shield, who decided the letter was a fake. Ularitharion led a raid upon Shadowfang Keep to search for Sherazhina. At the Keep, the heroes destroyed the Worgen. They also discovered evidence of a Forsaken plot to trick them into believing that the Worgen had eaten Sherazhina, and that the Forsaken themselves might have kidnapped her, and then engineered the situation to rid themselves of their enemies.
Seeking a lead, Ularitharion began to track Sherazhina's last steps, while Lady Casteldra Andralis of Stormwind led a team of heroes into the lands of the Forsaken themselves, to seek information from a childhood friend, Lady Lucciana di Valderis. Lucciana, while one of the Forsaken, had not forsaken her old loyalties or morals with undeath, and still held herself loyal to the true line of kings of Lordaeron. However, with the fall of Shadowfang Keep, the Forsaken were tightening their hold over their southern holdings in preparation for a strike at Hillsbrad. As a result, Lucciana had been arrested for treason and taken to Brill. Her keep on Fenris Island was controlled by undead Gnolls, led by a Forsaken necromancer. The heroes rescued Lucciana's butler, Talwyn, who was slain by undead shortly thereafter, and destroyed the necromancer and his forces before heading north to Brill. There, Casteldra's magic, combined with the wits of the druid Leszi, were able to spirit Lucciana out from under the noses of the Forsaken to Northshire Abbey, where she sought asylum.
From information supplied by Lady di Valderis, and the results of Ularitharion's own investigations, the heroes discovered that Sherazhina had been captured by two Forsaken apothecaries and their servant, an embittered albino Kaldorei assassin. The apothecaries had quarrelled about what to do with Sherazhina, and sent word to their masters in the Undercity asking what should be done - in the time that this bought, Sherazhina managed to slip her bonds and escape shortly before the farm was destroyed by Ularitharion and his comrades, and the first of the two apothecaries was slain by Meegaan. The party tracked Sherazhina west from the Go'Shek Farm to the ruined city of Stromgarde, where she had been rescued by the forces of Prince Galen Trollbane. Sherazhina was finally reunited with her friends. However, the second alchemist had not forgotten her, and while Ularitharion lead his companions in a battle against the Syndicate leaders in the keep, Sherazhina was recaptured by the forces of Apothecary Fel. The Viridian Shield gave chase to the Thandol Span, where the albino assassin attacked, stunning Ularitharion and overpowering Lander before being defeated by Leszi and falling off the bridge to his death.
The Viridian Shield had now lost the trail, but regrouped in Darkshire, where they knew the apothecary's stronghold was. In desperation, Fel used his magics to reanimate all the undead in the graveyard on Raven's Hill, to kill or at least delay the heroes while he attempted to drain the Light from Sherazhina, and use it to restore himself to life. His plans were in vain, however, as the heroes broke through his defences, and his own unlife was extinguished by the strength of Cyraan. The heroes then battled their way to his laboratory, deep underground in a forgotten crypt, to find that they were almost too late - Sherazhina was on the verge of death. In desparation, Ularitharion drew upon his own life to heal Sherazhina, restoring her own health at the cost of his own. Sherazhina was rescued at last, but Ularitharion collapsed in a coma.
Lander took Ularitharion and Sherazhina back to Northshire Abbey to care for them there, while the Shield waited with bated breath. Sherazhina's recovery progressed well, but Ularitharion remained in his coma for a week, and no priestly magic could heal him. However, Sherazhina used the own powers of the Light that the Forsaken had tried to steal upon him, and this awoke Ularitharion from his coma at last.
Meegaan Earthrunner, now an officer in the armies of the Alliance, joined the Viridian Shield.

Following the rescue of Lady Lucciana di Valderis from Brill, a secret trial was held in Northshire Abbey by a tribunal whose purpose it was to determine the veracity of Lucciana's story, and to decide whether she should be allowed to defect to the Alliance. The Viridian Shield was summoned to Northshire Abbey to give testimony at the trial, led by Lady Casteldra Andralis, who was a childhood friend of Lucciana's. Not all of the Shield was able to attend Northshire: toxins of the late Apothecary Fel, destroyed only a few weeks earlier by the Viridian Shield, found their way into the Darkshire water supply, and so Ularitharion and Lander, amongst others, were forced to heal the sick and attempt to purify the water.
Lady Casteldra reached Northshire only to find it in chaos. Father Ulfias, one of the members of the tribunal, had been found murdered, his corpse partially devoured. Suspicion fell upon Lucciana, due to the well-known habit of the undead to devour corpses, and only Briona Nielson of the Stormwind Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences seemed interesting in uncovering the truth. The Shield and Briona met the senile Abbot Cuthred, and acquired his permission to investigate.
The investigations quickly paid off, as it became apparent that Ulfias had been stabbed to death, and his corpse partially devoured by the wolves that roam the wilderness, before being dragged back. Realising that Lucciana had been framed, the investigators soon narrowed down the possible suspects to one of the other jurors: Vivielle, a self-righteous paladin; Egraine, a flustered priestess; Garoeis, a naive priest; and Roland, a lecherous and sleazy nobleman. All of the suspects appeared to have something to hide. Vivielle refused to cooperate with the investigation, Egraine was found to be a disgraced noblewoman from Hillsbrad who had been seduced by Roland, Garoeis was in love with a peasant woman, and Roland was slipping out of the monastery secretly to meet with someone.
Following an apparition by Ulfias' ghost, the Shield discovered that someone at the Abbey was in the employ of the Forsaken, and trying to stop Lucciana from defecting. Ulfias had discovered this, confronted the suspect, and been murdered. Vivielle accused Briona of being the murderess but was defeated in a duel. She fled into the wilderness, shocked that the Light had 'abandoned' her.
Meanwhile, the ancient Abbot died in his sleep. Much to everyone's surprise, his designated heir was Garoeis: Cuthred felt that Garoeis' love would teach him more about the Light than others would ever know. During the fuss, Roland returned to the Monastery and slipped out. He was followed by the Shield, who discovered he was meeting with members of the Defias Brotherhood. Believing that Roland had betrayed them, the Defias attacked and were defeated. Roland had in fact owed the Defias a sizeable gambling debt - he was not the murderer. However, he let slip the vital clue: when he had seduced Egraine, she had become pregnant. Had she left the baby in Tarren Mill when the Undead overran it?
Realising that this was the leverage by which the Forsaken controlled Egraine, the heroes raced back to the Monastery, where they were joined by Garoeis. They were just in time to confront Egraine, who had taken a knife to kill Lucciana in person. Garoeis tried to reason with her, saying that everyone deserved a chance, including Lucciana. He intervened when Egraine, in tears, attacked, and was accidentally stabbed by her knife, dying. The Viridian Shield subdued Egraine with ease, who was overcome with remorse when she saw she had killed Garoeis. Egraine was sent to trial for her crimes, but not before begging the heroes to rescue her baby from the Undercity - she had been told that it would be eaten by the Forsaken if she did not do as they say. Lucciana, who had given into despair about her undead nature and her worth as an individual, was remotivated by the sacrifice of Garoeis on her behalf, and was accepted into the Alliance as a spymaster. And Briona became a member of the Viridian Shield.

Using information supplied by Lucciana, Ularitharion infiltrated the Undercity to rescue Egraine's baby. Egraine's child was intended as a trap for the Viridian Shield, as it had been injected with a deadly plague. As the plague spread, members of the Viridian Shield had to undergo a dangerous quest to find a cure. Ularitharion befriended an orphan child in Goldshire, Meemy. Meemy's parents had been lost beyond the Dark Portal fourteen years earlier, and with the opening of the Dark Portal four months earlier now common knowledge, Meemy wished to discover the fate of her parents. Ularitharion departed Azeroth for Outland.

Without Ularitharion's leadership, the Viridian Shield began to splinter. A small group became vigilantes in defence of the environment, attacking settlements across Azeroth. Maryla consolidated her leadership over the Viridian Shield and created safeguards to ensure that its members would not 'go rogue' again. Ularitharion returned from Outland, having found the graves of Meemy's parents, to discover that his leadership had led to the catastrophe that claimed the life of his sister. He acknowledged Maryla as the new leader of the Viridian Shield and then returned to the Emerald Dream to meditate on how good intentions had led to this tragedy.

King Varian Wrynn returned to Stormwind. He exposed Lady Katrana Prestor as the dragon Onyxia, and slew her. His first act upon resuming his position as King was to fast-track the long delayed renevations of Stormwind's harbour. He also took action against corruption within the nobility, several of whom had been working with Lady Prestor. The investigations of Lady Casteldra Andralis and her assistants proved to be instrumental in this process. As a result, Casteldra freed herself from her unwanted engagement to Lord Roland Dutanion, who had been disgraced by his minor connections to Onyxia, and won the respect of her previously dubious family for her way of life.

The Lich King Arthas sent armies of undead against both the Alliance and Horde, which were defeated. This disruption stirred Ularitharion from his meditation, and he returned to the waking world.
The present day...
Ularitharion returned to the Viridian Shield with the answers that he was looking for – that he can only be held responsible for his own actions, and that his inaction at this time would be a crime far greater than any he felt he had committed in the past. He confirmed Maryla in her continued leadership and then travelled to Northrend to take the fight to the enemy. (WoW: Wrath of the Lich King begins.)
Meegaan Earthrunner's unit was assigned to attack the Wrath Gate as part of the grand army under the leadership of Highlord Bolvar Fordragon. During the debacle that occured there, Meegaan's unit was destroyed. Meegaan escaped and joined forces with soldiers of the Argent Crusade.

Maryla Tashin took control of the Viridian Shield and led them in defence of Elwynn Forest. During the fighting, Colora Moonstone was slain by one of the extremist members of the Viridian Shield.
