Ularitharion Moonstone was born two thousand years before the War of the Ancients, to a family in the small Kaldorei settlement of Tandralas. He was an unremarkable, if somewhat insular, young elf, with few friends: the closest of these being his younger sister, Colora. When the time came for Ularitharion to choose his path, he became a soldier in the armies of Lord Skyfire, specialising as a scout and tracker. It was in this time that he first became aware of the greatness of the wilderness, which would dominate his later life. He made a new friend as well at this time: Lady Iliciana Skyfire, daughter of Lord Skyfire, whom the young scout began cautiously to court.
When the War of the Ancients struck, and the Burning Legion's forces marched across Azeroth, Ularitharion went to war. Lord Skyfire's forces joined with those of Lord Ravencrest, who led the Kaldorei defence, and Ularitharion was reunited with his sister Colora, who had become a Priestess of Elune at the temple at Suramar. They fought bravely, but it was the actions of a different nascent druid and priestess which saved the world: Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind. The Moonstone siblings achieved no particular glory save that of surviving.
Following the war, the time came for Lady Iliciana's Choosing, when she would select her life's partner. She promised to Choose Ularitharion, and the two slept together - but later, Ularitharion was visited by a sorrowful Colora, who revealed to him that Iliciana had been promising such to many, and sleeping with many. The scout had seen signs of this before, but blocked them out. His sister's words were the only ones he would believe, that would force him to see the truth, and he angrily confronted Iliciana. The Lady Skyfire laughed at him and denied any love for Ularitharion, and powerless to do anything against her he cursed her and fled from her. In fact, Iliciana may have had honest feelings for him and been forced to end the affair by her family.
Wishing to withdraw from the world, Ularitharion sought out Malfurion Stormrage. The hero was now spreading the teachings of druidism amongst the Kaldorei and gaining many recruits, and so Ularitharion renounced his previous life to live in the wilderness and become one with nature. His bitterness over the affair with Iliciana led to his progress to be slow and halting at first, but he already had a great empathy for the natural world from his time as a scout. He bid farewell to his sister and entered the Emerald Dream to sleep, and there grow further in power and wisdom of the wilderness. In the Emerald Dream, Ularitharion was trained in the arts of the druids by Veridemu, a great green she-dragon. Ularitharion spent thousands of years living amongst all the animals of Azeroth, gaining great insight into their ways. In this time he lost his bitterness, asa well as much of his connection to his old life.
Ularitharion slept too deeply, and did not awake to fight the Burning Legion. He returned to the world to find it greatly changed, and set out to explore it and defend nature once more. During his wanderings, he made many new allies around the world, as well as being reunited once more with his sister. In the Kingdom of Stormwind, Ularitharion met the priestesses Lander and Fevrier, who showed him how the races of the world were no less threatened than the wilderness. In the forests of Quel'thalas he rescued a High Elven lady known as Avier from the Blood Elves, and took her as his apprentice for a time. He met many others as well.
However, when Malfurion Stormrage was replaced by Fandral Staghelm, Ularitharion's independant actions were seen as those of a rogue and maverick, and he was summoned back to Teldrassil. Ularitharion returned and decried the Cenarion Circle's lack of involvement with the outside world, citing the crises he had seen around the world. Why did the Cenarion Circle not take a more active role in the defence of Azeroth? Ularitharion gained many followers amongst the druids, but his actions served only to further factionalise the already infighting Cenarion Circle.
The situation came to a head when a meteorite fell from the sky and crashed in the Azuremyst Islands, off the western coast of Kalimdor. The Cenarion Circle refused to take any action to combat the ecological disaster there, due to Fandral's obsession with the war against Ahn'Qiraj in Silithus. Ularitharion gathered up many of his supporters in the Cenarion Circle, as well as the allies that he had met throughout his years of travel, and set sail to the Azuremyst Islands to take action in person, despite the Circle's decision. There, the group discovered the meteorite had in fact been the Exodar. After some initial misunderstandings, the group aided the Draenei in handling the emergency, and fought off an invasion of naga that sought to claim the Naaru craft for themselves.
Following the return of the group from the Azuremyst Islands, a month after the crash, Ularitharion was called before a meeting of the Cenarion Circle. After a tense argument with Fandral Staghelm, Ularitharion declared that he would create his own order, dedicated to doing what the Circle would no longer do - a Viridian Shield to defend the wilderness. It was only the intercession of Keeper Remulos that stopped the Circle and the Shield from permanently splitting ways. The Viridian Shield was formed as a group of like-minded individuals dedicated to defending Azeroth against destroyers and despoilers. Due to their actions in the Azuremyst Isles, a large number of Draenei also chose to ally with the Shield. Ularitharion found himself to be the leader of the group.
Ularitharion is wise and compassionate, but he does not relate well to others or to any sort of emotion after his ten thousand year repose. He is steadfast in what he believes, and tolerant of the beliefs of others. He has no tolerance for evil, however, and seeks to destroy it ceaselessly. His inability to understand how the world of mortals differs from that of the wilderness distances him from others, although he is conscious of this flaws in himself and is working to correct them.
